What is CAGR?

CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) is the smoothed-out annual rate at which an investment would have grown if it grew at a steady rate every year — even though real returns fluctuate year to year. It's useful for comparing investments over different time periods on a like-for-like basis.

Formula

CAGR = (Final Value ÷ Initial Value)1/n − 1

Where n = number of years between the initial and final value.
